Welcome to the Reading Room!
Kennedy School's Reading Room consists of seven reading specialists. All 1st-3rd grade classrooms have an hour of Reading Room built into their daily schedule. Kindergarten has 45 minutes in their daily schedule. Students are divided into small groups and our reading instruction is differentiated to meet the needs of each individual group.
During Reading Room students receive 30 minutes of FUNdations and 30 minutes of guided reading instruction.
FUNdations is a thorough, multisensory, structured literacy approach to teaching foundational reading and spelling skills. It systematically addresses:
-

-
Phonemic Awareness
-
Phonics & Word Study
-
Accuracy, Automaticity, and Fluency
-
High Frequency Words (“Trick” words)
-
Handwriting
-
Spelling
-
Vocabulary
-
Comprehension
Guided reading lessons include phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary instruction. The students are exposed to a variety of texts and genres throughout the school year.
